Where is the country of Malta and why should you visit?
Malta is a small island nation located in the Mediterranean Sea, part of the European Union and has a rich history. Some notable facts about Malta include:
1. Ancient History: Malta has a history that dates back thousands of years, with evidence of human habitation on the islands dating as far back as 5200 BC. It is home to some of the world's oldest megalithic structures, such as the temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, which predate the pyramids of Egypt.
2. Language: Although the official languages of Malta are Maltese and English, many Maltese speak other languages including Italian.
3. Game of Thrones Influence: The Azure Window was a famous natural limestone arch on the island of Gozo, known for its appearance in "Game of Thrones." Unfortunately, it was lost in 2017 when it collapsed into the sea during a storm.
4. The Maltese Falcon: Surprisingly, the iconic film "The Maltese Falcon," starring Humphrey Bogart is not actually set in Malta, and the famous "Maltese Falcon" statuette in the film has no real connection to Malta.
5. UNESCO Sites: Malta has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the City of Valletta, the Megalithic Temples, and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground burial site dating back to 2500 BC.
If you have 36 hours to spare, here are my recommendations of what to do when you visit Malta. Bookmark this post and have a great trip!
Day 1: Explore Malta’s history, culture, and food!
Arrive in Valletta, the capital of Malta, and check into your hotel. Depending on the season, stop by a local grocer and stock up on snacks and water.
Next, take a walking tour of the city, including the St. John's Co-Cathedral, Grand Harbour, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
End the day with dinner in a traditional Maltese restaurant. My favorite is U Bistrot.
Day 2: Get ready to explore!
Visit the Blue Lagoon, a natural pool with crystal-clear water.
Go snorkeling or scuba diving in the Mediterranean Sea.
Have dinner at a seafood restaurant overlooking the water. Another favorite of mine is Paranga
Day 3: Explore nature and enjoy more local cuisine
Pack a lunch and hike to the top of the Dingli Cliffs for stunning views of the island. The views are wonderful and relaxing.
Visit the ancient city of Mdina, also known as the Silent City.
Have dinner at a restaurant in the city of Rabat, just outside of Mdina. If going during the warm season, take in the views while eating at Fork and Cork.
Day 4: Depart and buy souvenirs
Depart from Malta. Popular souvenirs are blown glass or door knockers. I recommend these because they are very artistic and ornate.
These are my recommendations based on personal experience. You are welcome to design your own itinerary and adjust the excursions based on interests and mobility. Start here: Malta Tourism Website.
Lastly, always do your research before traveling. Every country I visit, I go to their tourism website then visit the tourism office upon arrival. The tourism office offers excursion discounts and welcome kits. The staff can also make recommendations based on diet, interests, and time.
